The children of Peru are suffering from underinvestment in the education system by a Government that appears uninterested in the future of it’s children and therefore in the country as a whole. It is often claimed that education is free in Peru but this is a misleading statement as for thousands of poor families the small cost of registration and other charges prove prohibitively expensive to be able to send their children to school. While this may be a small amount of money as seen from western eyes, in a poor country still reeling from the structural adjustment of the 1990’s, it’s an obstacle that families can simply not surpass.
The project will where possible work with the whole family to set up their own micro enterprises so that they can lift themselves out of their miserable economic situation and they themselves can pay for their children’s education. This is a sustainable way of getting children into school as with a successful business the family can pay for their children’s education every year without further necessity for funding from Arribaya.
In situations where the family is unable to start it’s own micro enterprise we will directly support their children to enter school and support them throughout their school career.
Arribaya aims to help the poor children of this impoverished part of Peru to enter into the education system from which they have been excluded and to give them and the country as a whole the chance of a better future. Only through education will Peru be able to break the cycle of poverty which holds so much of it’s population below the poverty line.
